About Siglap
Siglap's name probably comes from the Malay word gelap, meaning dark. One story links it to dark clouds when a Bugis chief arrived in the 1660s; historians also point to a solar eclipse in 1821.
It was once four coastal kampongs and a Japanese fishing community. The Frankel family developed Opera Estate, naming its roads after operas such as Carmen and Aida.
Siglap MRT opened in June 2024. Large condos such as Mandarin Gardens (1986) and Seaside Residences (2021) stand beside the older landed streets.
